IE sucks and can kiss my ass

Posted in Hatred on 21.05.2009.

This is a small rant about browsers, standards, CSS and all kinds of stupidity. You are meant to take it seriously.

I've just read an article by the famous Jonathan Snook about elephants and the linked article about browsers. So read them before you read this or you'll be pretty much clueless.

Jonathan usually writes very nice articles, but this one somehow made me mad like a lesbian feminist. And here's why.

All of this really depends on the target audience, doesn't it? For several projects I hat to work on (at work), cross browser compatibility was a part of the contract. There was no option. Let me tell you something: that famous pie everyone laughs at is freaking TRUE. We all know it. I've literally lost days and sometimes even weeks just trying to please the crappy IE engine. What's my reward when I'm finally done? Oh look, it finally looks like it was supposed to look at the freaking beginning. How satisfactory.

Privately, if you can't visit with a standards-compliant browser, or don't even know the difference between a browser and "the internets" - I don't want you on my site. Simple as that.

And what's the purpose of giving "some" content to old browsers? Companies won't fix it if it's not broken. Sooner or later, they will upgrade, why not speed up the process?

Only two things can happen: either we keep supporting messy browsers and old versions and things continue to be crappy on the web, or we ignore them and force the dumbasses creating crappy browsers to do something about it. Maybe one day make the web nice and standardized. I know, it's just a dream, but I like it.

I mean, imagine this kind of situation in your average desktop application: if every version of compiler interprets your application differently and it behaves differently on every build of windows, how would anyone get anything done? Are we going to hack things forever? If I miss a semicolon in a C app the compiler kicks me in the nads, yet we are allowed to dump all kinds of crap in HTML and CSS. If I don't open a <?php tag, my PHP code won't run! Can you imagine the impudence??

IMNSHO, if something can't follow the standards and parse and display things properly, it is not a browser. It's a piece of crap and should be abolished. We are the damn users, we raise the bar, they heed and obey. If not, we use something else and tell them to feck off.

Also, what is this about people "not being able to update"? It's not a man in a wheelchair attempting to climb a mountain. Or me trying to run on my nipples. We're talking about downloading a piece of free software and using it. If a company refuses to upgrade, than that company is a dumbass and should declare bankruptcy as soon as possible. You don't deserve my content. Bugger off.

Hey, I have an idea. Why not make your sites compatible with a resolution such as 320x200? I'm fairly sure there are still people around using all sorts of display devices..

If you referring to IE6, when you say 'IMNSHO, if something can't follow the standards and parse and display things properly, it is not a browser.'

I don't really think IE6 was that bad when it came out, it was certainly much better than what there was before. The problem is simply that it's outdated. By TODAY's standards it is a POS. And what standards were there for IE6 to follow in 2000/2001?

Of course, you have a point there. I'm sure that every new version of IE is better than the previous, but it still feels like building a tower on top of a cardboard box.

Still, that's no excuse for IE7 and 8 to continue their crappy support of web standards. I'm fairly positive MS has a whole team of experts and developers dedicated to IE, and this is the best they can do? Well, that's a shame..

Feck, I thought I was the only one in the Software community that said feck. Bout feckin' time someone said this shite. Good article. Also good comments on the blogs about the whiminz not taking jokes.

Feck! Drink! Arse! Girls! I mean..thanks Joseph. :)

It's funny actually, that I could be called a sexist even after explicitly stating that I'm not. I suppose it's difficult to argue with a gobshite. That was one of the poorest attempts of character assassination I've ever seen. I plan to write an article about political correctness, it's been bothering me for years.

I love my brick!
