As a full-time statistician, I use Gnome on a daily base in my office and code my statistics scripts in VIM, and I like it (although the underlying OS is actually Solaris).

However, as a freelancer painter when off work, I find Linux, or more accurately, X Window environment, is lack of well-designed artist-oriented applications. Yes, you could probably struggle to use Gimp to get a somehow similar result as using Photoshop, but... for artists, applications are just tools, the same as pencils, or charcoal sticks, and I would only use the best tools I could find/afford... so... I end up using Photoshop in Mac OS X (well, it's UNIX and even has an X in its name so that is not too bad right?)
